Letters from Sir Thomas Mitchell (Surveyor General of New South Wales) to Robert Hoddle, Officer in Charge of the Survey Office, Melbourne, until 1851, then first Surveyor General of Victoria, 1851-1853. Documents cover the period 1837-1847, omitting 1839 and 1840, and are preceded by a set of instructions for a general survey and a series of circulars dated 1832-1836.

Robert Hoddle arrived in New South Wales in 1823 and worked with J. Oxley in Queensland and the Blue Mountains. In 1837 he was appointed senior surveyor at Port Phillip and designed Melbourne, Geelong, Williamstown and many other Victorian settlements. George Baxter Pritchard was head of the school of mines at the Working Men's College (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology) 1897-1934.
